When a Book Speaks to Your Now and Your Eternity
It’s not every day you read a book that not only challenges and changes the way you live in the here and now, but that also strengthens your excitement and anticipation for Heaven. In light of Eternity Perspectives on Heaven by Randy Alcorn, did exactly that for me.
A Brief Look Inside In Light of Eternity

“The best of earth is a glimpse of heaven, the worst of earth a glimpse of hell.”
-Randy Alcorn
In his book, Alcorn explores what Scripture reveals about Heaven and why a true understanding of it can transform how we live today. He carefully supports each idea with scripture, which gave me confidence that his reflections were grounded in God’s Word. As he pointed out each scripture, I could refer back to it and see whether his assumptions were supported by the scriptures he provided.
How This Book Met Me in My Grief
After the loss of my son, I didn’t realize how much peace would come in learning about Heaven until a friend on social media sent me a list of Scriptures that answered some questions about what happens to a believer just minutes after they pass. I didn’t realize how badly I needed those answers. Or how much comfort knowing those aspects of Heaven would bring during my grief.
A few years later, while still walking through grief, I discovered the
perfect,
short,
powerful read
that gave me some of the clearest most hope-filled insights into Heaven, Randy Alcorn’s In Light of Eternity.
This book brought unexpected healing in my grief. Because it got me excited for Heaven and filled me with hope for what my son may already be experiencing there and what I have to look forward to. And when I closed the last page of this book I can truthfully say I had never been more excited for eternity and more motivated to live in light of it.
On my grief journey, I realized that truly grasping the hope of Heaven changes not only how we live, but how we grieve. When we forget the reality of eternity, we can easily slip into grieving as those who have no hope. I wrote more about that in this post about how we may grieve like unbelievers.
Why It Stood Out Among Other Books On Heaven

Compared to many other books on Heaven that I have read, this one easily surpassed them all. Even Alcorn’s longer work, titled Heaven—which is a good read but much more detailed—didn’t capture my heart the way this shorter book did. In Light of Eternity is chock full of wonder and awe for Heaven, supported by scripture, and accessible to any reader seeking to understand the joy that awaits us.

“What Will We Be Like in Heaven?,” “The Opposite of Boredom,” “Will We Remember Our Lives on Earth?,” “Can Those in Heaven See What Happens Here?,” “Refreshing Rest and the Fascinating Labor of Heaven.”
The Few Minor Drawbacks
If there’s any minor drawbacks, it’s that Alcorn occasionally references characters or ideas from his other fictional books, which may feel unfamiliar to those who haven’t read them. And though the majority of his insights are strongly supported by Scripture, there were a few instances where his interpretations felt like a bit of a stretch. Still, even those instances prompted thoughtful reflection rather than outright objection, so overall, this is a deeply inspiring and biblically grounded book.
Who I’d Recommend It To
I highly recommend In Light of Eternity to anyone who’s ever longed for a clearer picture of Heaven, wrestled with loss, or for those who feel the gentle reminder that our days here are few. It’s a book I now often give to friends who are grieving, and it continues to renew my own hope each time I return to it.

With grace and hope, 🦋
